The West Vancouver Memorial Library is a critical community resource enabling people with disabilities to participate in community life. Open and welcoming to all, the library connects people with information, the world of imagination, and each other. Installing an exterior ramp will allow people with mobility and vision challenges to have safe and secure access to the building.
We wanted to break down barriers so all people can benefit from being life-long, self-directed learners. Exterior access to the building has been difficult because of the steepness, angle, and lack of lighting on the current path from the parking lot to the front door. Our new accessibility ramp will allow people with mobility and vision challenges to move in and out of the building freely, both day and night, and in all kinds of weather.
This project is going to make our community more inclusive. Those with disabilities, and those without, will be gathering in our public space where they will have a shared sense of place and belonging.
It’s the opportunity for our organization and our community to learn how we can best serve those with disabilities and positively impact their lives. Thank you to RHF and the Government of Canada for making a difference in our community.
