Canada Games Centre

The Canada Games Centre, built as a host venue for the 2007 Canada Winter Games, is the largest centre of its kind in Northern Canada. It features two arenas, a flexi hall, a fieldhouse, aquatic and fitness centres, indoor running track and event space. A Barrier Buster grant will allow the aquatic centre to install a ceiling track lift to transfer people to and from their wheelchairs so that people with mobility disabilities can participate more easily in aquatic activities.

1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

   Teachers, parents, caregivers, and other members of our community came together to generate interest in applying for this opportunity, and offered encouragement for the project to move forward. The goal was, and is, to remove a barrier for those who arguably benefit the most from aquatic therapy.

2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

   The ceiling track lift will help those who need to be transferred to and from a wheelchair in order to be suited while participating in aquatic therapy or recreational swimming. This project has started further discussions on accessibility in Whitehorse.
