W.E. Kinvig Elementary is located in a low-income community and serves children from many different backgrounds. Over 20 students have disabilities and are not able to join their peers on the current playground because of physical barriers to accessibility. With the Barrier Buster grant, the school will upgrade the playground, creating an inclusive space benefitting children of all abilities.
The school’s playground is not sufficient for our students’ needs. The current set of swings has a log barrier with pea gravel that prohibits children in wheelchairs or those with mobility issues from accessing it. Breaking down those barriers will allow our 22 students with disabilities to access the equipment and be included.
As with many communities, this playground will serve as a meeting place for parents and community members. Parents will begin to grow relationships, build community, and create the village it takes to raise a child.
It’s knowing you’re creating a space where all children and community members can come together and share in the pure joy of play, regardless of their mental, physical, or emotional capability.
