Heritage Park

The Peachland Pier, in Heritage Park, is envisioned as a wheelchair-accessible attraction in downtown Peachland, BC. It will be the first of its kind on Okanagan Lake, and will meet the needs of people using wheelchairs or walkers, or pushing strollers. Each year, the annual Fishing Forever Derby in Heritage Park gives people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy a day of fishing they may not otherwise have. The accessible pier will help spread the message that people of all abilities can access and enjoy their natural surroundings.

1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

   We decided to upgrade the site of the annual Forever Fishing Derby for people with disabilities, as well as provide a heritage site in honour of Canada’s 150^th birthday.

2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

   It will provide a wheelchair-accessible pier for individuals of all ages and degrees of mobility. Signage on the pier will feature historical stories of the Okanagan and serve as a tourist attraction.

3. What’s the best thing about being a Barrier Buster?

   It’s seeing the look on people’s faces when they catch fish during the Derby, and also having an exceptional venue for many community activities in the district of Peachland.
