FortWhyte Alive

FortWhyte Alive is an award-winning park in Winnipeg connecting people with nature. It provides programs, natural settings including hiking trails and freshwater lakes, and facilities for environmental education, outdoor recreation, and social enterprise. In this way, FortWhyte Alive promotes awareness and understanding of the natural world and actions leading to sustainable living. The Barrier Buster grant will improve accessibility at the reception centre and field station.

1. Why did you decide to break down barriers in your community?

   There was a need to revitalize accessibility to our Alloway Reception Centre and Siobhan Richardson Field Station. Upgrading our existing entryway doors and washroom facilities will result in permanent improved accessibility. It will tangibly meet the needs of people with disabilities in an innovative, cost-effective way.

2. How is this project going to make a difference in your community?

   We consulted with many individuals and members of disability organizations who regularly visit FortWhyte Alive. We received feedback indicating our existing infrastructure is inadequate, especially for individuals with mobility disabilities. This project will provide access to all for our unique programs in a way that does not establish or perpetuate differences based on a person’s ability.

3. What’s the best thing about being a Barrier Buster?

   It’s working toward a common vision of Access4All with other passionate groups. We’re looking forward to spreading the word about this project to our staff, members, accessibility partners, and visitors to FortWhyte Alive.
